Verse of Reflection:
“What matters is not your outer appearance—the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes—but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in.”
~1 Peter 3: 3-4 (MSG)
After brainstorming several dozen names for this blog, I decided on Woven Beautiful. I hesitated spotlighting the word beauty or beautiful because of the way it’s narrowly defined in our culture – there’s a strong focus on the physical aspect of beauty. I wondered what people would think, if the wrong idea would be conveyed, and if anyone would be interested enough to click over and read.
I chose to use the word beautiful because I have a passion for reclaiming the word beauty. There is something in our very core (especially as women) that longs to reflect beauty – and longs to know that we are beautiful.
Creation is a reflection of God’s beauty. Plants burst with color, sunsets paint the sky, birds spread their wings and fly, butterflies perch on flowers to get nectar – and then there’s us. God chose to create us in His own image. We should be celebrating that more!
God wants us to care for the bodies He’s given us, but He doesn’t want us to idolize them. He isn’t saying in 1 Peter that we shouldn’t do our hair, wear make-up, or put on jewelry. Because He loves us so much, He wants us to pay closer attention to cultivating inner beauty because it has eternal value in His Kingdom. Our bodies are fading and aging, but it’s our souls that live eternally.
Unfading beauty spills out of us in the way we treat others, in the way we present ourselves to the world, and in the way we choose to spend our time. It’s using our God-given talents, it’s showing others grace, it’s having faith in an unseen God, it’s reflecting the Fruit of the Spirit, and it’s embracing authenticity.
We are woven beautiful by our Maker. We can take a deep breath and exhale.
Prayer: Dear Father, Thank you for wonderfully making us in Your glorious image. Forgive us for buying into cheap lies about beauty. We are Your beautiful daughters and may we proudly claim that and be reflectors of Your radiant beauty. We are constantly bombarded with images and opinions telling us that we’ll be happy if we perfect our physical appearance. Help us to not settle for happy, but instead delight in the joy of cultivating inner beauty, because anything done for Your Kingdom is never a waste of time. We love You and desire to honor You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
